On October 21, the handover ceremony of the Niue Island Ring Road Upgrade Project, funded by the Chinese government and built by The First Engineering Bureau of CREC, was held in Niue’s capital, Alofi. Over 70 attendees, including Niue’s Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi, Minister of Infrastructure Toke Tatuui, cabinet members, Chinese Ambassador to Niue Wang Xiaolong, and representatives from various sectors, attended the event.
In his speech, Prime Minister Tagelagi praised the deep friendship between Niue and China, emphasizing that bilateral exchanges and continuous dialogue are essential for strengthening Niue-China relations over the next 50 years. He expressed his hope to deepen cooperation with China in more fields, fostering mutual growth and regional stability.
Ambassador Wang Xiaolong conveyed his congratulations on the project’s completion and handover. He highlighted the support from the Niuean government and the diligence of The First Engineering Bureau of CREC, which ensured the high-quality, timely completion of the project despite challenges. The upgraded road, equipped with solar streetlights and road signs, enhances comfort and safety for residents, students, and tourists, and will contribute to Niue’s economic development and residents’ well-being.
The Niue Island Ring Road Upgrade Project is a landmark initiative under the China-Niue “Belt and Road” cooperation and part of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The project spans 46.1 kilometers, covering main roads and connecting routes, with road surface improvements, additional safety facilities, parking areas, sidewalks, and lighting.
