On November 4, Kiribati President Taneti Maamau, accompanied by Education Minister Alexander Teabo and other officials, visited the Uku Road Upgrade Project undertaken by The First Engineering Bureau of CREC.

The delegation inspected the ongoing roadbed construction and engaged in discussions with local government officials, project stakeholders, and the The First Engineering Bureau of CREC project team. President Maamau praised the project’s progress, quality, environmental management, and safety measures. He also commended the team’s localized workforce and training efforts, encouraging further participation in infrastructure development to bring greater benefits to local communities.

President Maamau pointed out that the The First Engineering Bureau of CREC’s Uku project team has achieved commendable performance in terms of construction progress, quality, environmental protection, and safety. He especially praised their efforts in localizing employment and providing personnel training. He encouraged CREC employees to continue their hard work and participate in more infrastructure projects in Kiribati, bringing greater benefits to the local population.

The Uku Road Upgrade Project, located in the Butaritari Atoll, spans approximately 34 kilometers, connecting Ukangang Village on the west to Kuma Village on the east. The project involves upgrading the existing two-lane coral stone road into a two-lane geocell-reinforced concrete road. Once completed, the project will greatly improve transportation efficiency, ease local travel, and contribute to regional economic and social development.
